The King, the Court and the Comédie

François Couperin and the Music of Versailles

An entertaining recital with readings, evoking the court and theatre in the time of

Louis XIV by Guildford’s internationally renowned harpsichordist.

The programme comprises a selection of pieces from the Ordres of François Couperin, using Kenneth

Gilbert’s edition and introduced by Penelope in her characteristic, entertaining and informative style.

Penelope Cave is a prize-winning harpsichordist who has given solo recitals in the Purcell Room, Wigmore Hall and many festivals in Britain and abroad. She has recorded for Naxos, Eagle and Hyperion Records, given solo broadcasts for Belgian Radio, Classic FM and BBC Radio 3 and her solo disc of Scarlatti and associated Iberian composers gained 5 stars from the BBC Music Magazine amongst other accolades.

In addition to her solo harpsichord recitals, she gives duet-recitals with Helena Brown on an original Broadwood square piano of 1795 and they were filmed for the DVD on the Bath Jane Austen Festival and by BBC Persia at the 2009 Edinburgh Festival where they performed a programme celebrating Dr Johnson.

Well known for her educational work, she has given masterclasses for EPTA, workshops and courses in France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Portugal and throughout Britain, including Trinity College, the universities of Hull, Belfast & Stirling, Benslow, Earnley, Jackdaws and Dartington International Summer School. She has given papers for conferences including FIMTE in Spain and the 23rd Annual Conference on Music in 18th-century Britain and writes for the Consort and Harpsichord & Fortepiano among other publications. She was recently awarded funding for a performance-related PhD, by Southampton University and the National Trust, and is researching 18th century music-making in the English Country House.
